Internetová encyklopedie Wikipedie je beze sporu nerozsáhlejším encyklopedickým projektem všech dob. Její anglická verze měla na konci října 2017 téměř 5,5 miliónu hesel. Její o něco mladší a hlavně menší česká sestra měla ve stejné době téměř 400 tisíc hesel, což je sice znatelně méně, ale i tak již nyní počtem překonává jakoukoliv
jinou českou encyklopedii včetně kultovního Ottova slovníku naučného. Tohoto úspěchu projekt dosáhl díky realizaci velmi jednoduché myšlenky: psát hesla může úplně každý, přičemž zároveň každý každého může kontrolovat, a tím dochází k vzájemné korekci a relativně dobré (nikoliv dokonalé) eliminaci chyb.

Wikipedie in Research Library Olomouc

Wikimedia Czech Republic is a Czech voluntary association supporting Wikimedia Foundation projects and one of the main goals it seeks is the quality improvement of Czech Wikipedia. To reach this, it tries to cooperate with various Czech cultural institutions, especially with public libraries. An example of a good cooperation of this kind is the cooperation with the Research Library in Olomouc. In the last two years Czech wikimedians and Olomouc librarians have organized two editathons – short meetings, whose aim was to write Wikipedia articles on Olomouc topics with the help of sources prepared by the Research library. Their result was more than 300 thousand bytes of good-quality text. Another mean of this cooperation is organizing various courses of writing Wikipedia, among which those aimed at senior citizens are especially worth mentioning. Senior citizens are highly valued contributors due to their life experience often combined with good knowledge and Wikimedia Czech Republic tries hard to involve them in the process of building Wikipedia. These courses also have an important social impact, as they help some of the senior citizens find lost purpose of life and overcome the feeling of social exclusion.
