The Use of Online Social Networks to Support Science and the Key Role of Libraries
Abstract
Purpose – The aim of this article is to analyze the possibilities of using online social networks as a support tool for science and research, highlight the potential challenges, and emphasize the irreplaceable role of libraries.
Approach/Methods – The core of the article is based on a systematic literature review, aimed at exploring current scientific literature focused on the use of online social networks in science. Two of the largest citation databases, Scopus and Web of Science, were used for the search. Key topics were identified through a combination of commonly used terms for online social networks in English and the English word for scientists. The search query was in the form (“social media” OR “online social network*” OR “social network* site*” OR “social network* service*”) AND scientists. The search was conducted at the title, abstract, and keywords levels of documents and was carried out in November 2025. The selection of texts was made through a preliminary screening based on titles and abstracts, followed by detailed reading of full texts. From the 3,324 documents found in the Scopus database and 1,780 in Web of Science, 70 were considered relevant, and their content analysis forms the structure of the article. To provide Czech context, identified areas were also searched in Czech using the Google search engine.
Findings – Based on the research, six areas were identified in which the use of online social networks can play a significant role in supporting science, including science communication, establishing collaborations and career development, recruiting participants for studies, increasing readership and citation of scientific publications, and alternative metrics for research evaluation. Challenges related to the use of online social networks in science were also identified, including the choice of platforms, changes in communication methods, time investment, credibility, harassment and attacks, and the instability of the social network environment. In addition, the possibilities of involving libraries in addressing some of these challenges were discussed in relevant sections.
Originality/Value – This article provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the potential of using online social networks in the context of science and the associated challenges, which is a topic that has so far been addressed only fragmentarily in the Czech and international academic settings, usually focusing on specific platforms or their possibilities of use.

Abstrakt
Účel – Cílem článku je zanalyzovat možnosti využití online sociálních sítí jakožto podpůrného nástroje pro vědu a výzkum, upozornit na možné výzvy s ním spojené a zároveň vyzdvihnout nezastupitelnou roli knihoven.
Přístup/Metody – Základ článku tvoří systematická rešerše, jejímž cílem bylo prozkoumat současnou vědeckou literaturu zaměřenou na téma využití online sociálních sítí ve vědě. Pro vyhledávání byly použity dvě největší citační databáze Scopus a Web of Science. Klíčová témata byla identifikována pomocí kombinace běžně používaných termínů pro online sociální sítě v angličtině a anglického slova pro vědce. Výraz pro vyhledávání byl použit ve tvaru (“social media” OR “online social network*” OR “social network* site*” OR “social network* service*”) AND scientists. Vyhledávání proběhlo na úrovni názvů, abstraktů a klíčových slov dokumentů a bylo realizováno v průběhu listopadu 2025. Pro výběr textů byl proveden předvýběr na základě názvu a abstraktu následovaný detailním čtením plného textu. Z vyhledaných 3 324 dokumentů v databázi Scopus a 1 780 ve Web of Science bylo 70 shledáno relevantních a jejich obsahová analýza tvoří základ struktury článku. Pro dodání českého kontextu byly identifikované oblasti vyhledány v češtině prostřednictvím vyhledávače Google.
Výsledky – Na základě provedeného výzkumu bylo identifikováno šest oblastí, ve kterých může hrát využití online sociálních sítí významnou roli na podporu vědy, zahrnující komunikaci vědy, navazování spolupráce a rozvoj kariéry, nábor účastníků do studií, navýšení čtenosti a citovanosti vědeckých publikací a alternativní metriky hodnocení výzkumu. Zároveň byly zjištěny výzvy spojené s využíváním sociálních sítí ve vědě, mezi které patří výběr platforem, změna způsobu komunikace, časová investice, důvěryhodnost, obtěžování a útoky a nestálost prostředí sociálních sítí. Nadto byly v relevantních částech diskutovány možnosti zapojení knihoven při pomoci s řešením některých výzev.
Originalita/Hodnota – Článek představuje komplexní a systematický pohled na potenciál využívání online sociálních sítí v kontextu vědy a výzvy s ním spojené, což je téma, které je v českém i zahraničním odborném prostředí dosud zpracováno jen fragmentárně, obvykle se zaměřením na konkrétní platformy nebo možnosti jejich využití.
